We met up with our tour group in Rome and spent the next two weeks touring Italy with them.

Portofino, Italy

Portofino, Italy is a beautiful little port town with cafes, a church and a castle on the adjourning hill. Movie stars and the very wealthy visit each other in yachts in the harbor. It was a perfect day for a visit.

The Road To Portofino, Italy

On our third day we took a trip by car to the village of Portofino. By now we were finally starting to hit a comfortable stride. We hired Paulo, a private driver, and spent the day learning Italian and teaching him some English. Along the way we enjoyed many scenic visages, visited a number of villages and had a nine course lunch in a tiny resturant in the village of Santa Magaherita. This area has been called “Italy’s Riviera.”

Genoa, Italy

We took a train from Milano to Genoa and then a cab to our hotel. Our luggage still had not arrived. I really liked the tiled and covered sidewalks and the almost gothic architecture of many of the buildings in Genoa. (Think Tim Burton’s Gotham City.)

You could get a great pizza for one at a street side cafe for something like $7 (pre-weak dollar). But we got funny looks when we dipped our bread in olive oil.

Milano, Italy

Our trip to Italy didn’t start start well. We had scheduled the trip around seeing La Boheme at La Scala. After our tickets were secured and arrangements made to travel, La Boheme was canceled. Once on the plane our flight left late and we missed our connection. We took an alternate flight and the airline lost all our luggage. It took eight hours standing in line to make it through customs. We pick up our vacation at our hotel room in Milano.
